Turnout Rugs

A turnout rug is used to protect the horse from cold, wind, and precipitation. Different climates require different rugs, and whether the horse is clipped or not also affects the choice.

The rug should sit over the withers at the front and cover the horse fully over the hindquarters. Make sure the rug provides sufficient coverage at the back, as horses often turn their hindquarters towards wind and rain. It is important that the rug does not pull too tightly across the shoulders and chest. A rug should also not feel too large, as this can affect the fit and disturb the horse.
